Healing Brothers is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization (since 2013) that is dedicated to improve the health and wellness of African American men and their families, resulting in the larger community becoming healthier and safer.

When discussing the ills and disparities within the African-American community, such issues as violence, drugs, poverty, and emotional, physical, and spiritual health are often discussed. When systematic concerns aren’t being questioned as barriers, the personal accountability of men is brought to the forefront. In addition, African-American men’s trauma is typically dismissed and not addressed. When African American men suffer, (directly or indirectly) they pass their trauma on to the women and children in their lives thus the cycle of pain continues and the community suffers tenfold. Without effectively addressing the

trauma it’s has proven difficult to fully experience a healthy life as a primary goal.

In 2008 we started our efforts to address increasing disparities confronting African Americans with a broad range of practical culturally sensitive trauma informed projects and strategies focused healing. We believe addressing historical trauma offers an alternative way of thinking about community building “from inside out” not just “the outside in”. It creates an environment for collaboration, wellness, sustainable change, “compassionate accountability” and community empowerment.  We realize that a stronger, thriving African American community improves the health of the community and the society as a whole.

Our work involves practical culturally sensitive trauma informed approaches that focus on ways to assist individuals and organizations working in the African American community as well as, communities of color leading to improve outcomes. By providing unique and innovative culturally specific and homogenous materials and services to promote self-improvement, empowerment, healing and hope to the communities being serviced. And build collaborations with likely and unlikely partners to challenge systems and institutions both inside and out of communities of color that create barriers to healing and empowerment.

We are commitment to helping organizations and communities help themselves by supporting a way of thinking that leads to self-awareness, healing and peace.
